Social Impact
Family becomes important to older people and the connection between grandparent and grandchild is important. They often collaborate and share secrets, both having the need for privacy (Kecman, 2006). Young children, teenagers and older people share some common problems. All may feel marginal to mainstream society and therefore less connected or valued.
A common misconception about old age is that life transitions are generally smooth and well-planned in contrast to the more disruptive changes of the teenage years. Older people prize their independence and mobility and that can be hindered by disconnects in communication. When people downsize from a family house to a smaller dwelling, retire from full time work or become dependant following a stroke or fall, these are the ‘tipping points’ that require exceptional communication support, whether such events are planned or unforeseen (Chen, 2008).
The over 65’s make up 40 per cent of all hospital admissions (Kunur and Gheerawo, 2007). Access to healthcare can be a primary concern when getting older. Also important is proximity to shops. Shopping is the primary reason for leaving the home, followed by needing to meet friends or family (Taken and van Lamoen, 2005).
Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise amongst older people due in part to a lack of education about the dangers of these diseases and a misunderstanding about who is likely to contract them (Ostrowski, 2006). Unfamiliarity with using condoms could also play a role.
