Overview
Forum for the Future describes sustainability as “a dynamic process which enables all people to realise their potential and improve their quality of life in ways which simultaneously protect and enhance the Earth’s life support systems.” Crime compromises such objectives in many ways and denies the achievement of “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Sustainable Development Commission, 2008).
To understand why crime is a barrier to sustainable development and how it connects to design approaches, it is important to consider its impact in economic, environmental and social terms.
